Steal away to the hygge-steeped Craignair Inn by the Sea, and enjoy some spectacular snowbound scenery and fresh-air adventures before winter bids adieu!
Our historic, upscale MidCoast bed-and-breakfast not only provides the coziest waterfront accommodations and some stellar on-site coastal cuisine, but also a marvelous springboard for some of the very best winter hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing in Maine.
Our Spruce Head, Maine inn positions you beautifully to explore some of the MidCoast’s outstanding winterscapes (and night-skyscapes!). Depending on snow conditions, you might be opting to strap on some cross-country skis or a pair of snowshoes, or perhaps simply lace up some insulated hiking boots—possibly enhanced by crampons or other traction devices—in order to hit the local trails.
And those trails include some very local options: A pleasant stroll across the causeway in front of The Craignair Inn leads you directly to the paths of the Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s 124-acre Clark Island Preserve, which covers the majority of Clark Island, one of the centerpieces of our seaside viewshed. Hike or snowshoe the preserve’s paths, which weave through woods and fields, edge vernal pools, and beckon to serene tidewater shores.
Also, just a hop, skip, and a jump from The Craignair Inn sits one of the most celebrated outdoor destinations not only on the MidCoast, but in all of Maine: Camden Hills State Park. Showcasing the noble, ledged heights of the Camden Hills—among the most significant highlands right along the Atlantic Seaboard—the park offers first-rate year-round recreation, including outstanding circuits for cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Snowshoe or ski the five-mile-long Multi-Use Trail that skirts the foot of Mount Megunticook, or trek to the summit of Mount Battie and its iconic coastland panorama. Other good snowshoeing routes include the Ridge, Scenic, and Tablelands trails.
The Camden Hills also encompass an absolutely premier MidCoast snowsports hub: the Camden Snow Bowl, which besides its downhill runs for skiers and snowboarders maintains a fine trail system for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with on-site gear rentals.
Another excellent winter recreation destination lies less than an hour to the northwest: the Hidden Valley Nature Center, a thousand-acre forest managed by the Midcoast Conservancy that includes postcard-perfect frontage along Little Dyer Pond. Better than 25 miles of groomed trails, including the Bowl Loop, Warber’s Way, and Sugar Ridge, await you here, along with on-site rentals for Nordic skis, snowshoes, and fat-tire bikes.
From the Camden Hills to Clark Island, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife tracks while you’re out enjoying the snowy throughways: Chancing upon the path of a red fox, a white-tailed deer, a snowshoe hare, or some other native critter is always a thrill!
Wherever you head for winter recreation during your Craignair Inn escape, be sure to pack plenty of layers, extra food and water, and a hard-copy trail map to supplement whatever mapping app you might favor.
